More on HSSI Cables High-Speed Serial Interface, commonly known as HSSI is a short-distance communications interface that is used to connect routers and switches on local area networks with the high speed lines of a wide area network. HSSI can be used between devices that are within fifty feet of each other and can achieve data rates as much as 52 Mbps. Usually HSSI cables are used
to connect a LAN router to a T3 line. HSSI cables can be used to interconnect devices on Token Ring and Ethernet LANs. HSSI cables can also be used for host-to-host linking, image processing, and disaster recovery applications as well. DSL Similarities
Similar to DSL, HSSI operates at the physical layer of a network, using the standard Open Systems Interconnection more commonly known as OSI. The electrical connection uses a 50-PIN connector. The HSSI transmission technology uses differential emitter-coupled logic ECL. HSSI uses gapped timing to allow DCE device to control the flow of data being transmitted from a DTE device such as a terminal or computer by adjusting the clock speed or deleting clock impulses. HSSI Pinning The HSSI cable uses the same number of pins and wires as a SCSI-2 cable, but uses the HSSI electrical interface. It is not recommended to use a SCSI-2 cable with an HSSI interface.
